Accessible Web Design / Section 508 Compliance
Not all Web site visitors have the same abilities. Having a Web site that is accessible to users with visual, physical, cognitive, and motor impairments allows a broader audience to use your Web site with relative ease.
While Federal and State-developed Web sites are mandated by law to provide accessible Web sites (Section 508 Compliance & Government Code section 11135), many private and commercial Web sites have followed these same accessibility requirements to make their sites accessible to all users. The process of creating an accessible Web site is a standardized process that unfortunately is not implemented in many business Web sites. Just like public places, Web sites increasingly are becoming ADA compliant.
The benefits of having an Accessible Web site include:
- Access to a large number of additional potential consumers
- Decrease the probability of legal action
- Web sites developed with Web standards easier to maintain
- Accessible Web sites available on more platforms (browsers, portable devices, screen readers etc.)
